"Come In from the Cold" to the Jazz Vespers
Saturday, February 4th at 6:00pm
One of the true virtuosos of the jazz trumpet, Jon Faddis joined Lionel Hampton's big band at the age of 18. After playing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and Charles Mingus, he became a noted studio musician in New York, appearing on numerous pop recordings in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His growth as a musician and individual artist led him to direct and become the main trumpet soloist for his friend and mentor Dizzy Gillespie, with the Dizzy Gillespie 70th Birthday Big Band, Dizzy's United Nation Orchestra and Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars Big Band. Jon led the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band at Carnegie Hall, where he conducted over 40 concerts in ten years, and has been leading the group's successor, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, since 2003.
A noted jazz educator, Jon teaches at The Conservatory of Music at Purchase College-SUNY, in Westchester, New York. He is also a guest lecturer at Columbia College Chicago, where he is the artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble.
